Project:
Cement Kiln Dust deposition site
Location: Exshaw, Alberta
Date of construction: 1996-1997
Description: A bi-product
of the cement manufacturing process, cement kiln dust necessitates
long-term storage in an isolated containment area. Medialand
designed such storage cells that met the strict regulations
and that were also unified with the surrounding landform. The
absence of soil on the site meant that it had to be created
using rock dust from the quarry mixed with organic matter. Suitable
plant species were chosen for the location that were suitable
grazing for wild mountain goats and deer.
