Project:
Vananda
Quarry
British
Columbia, Lafarge Canada
Construction Date: May
2002, continuing
Description: Adjacent to the northern part of Vancouver
Island in the Strait of Georgia is Texada Island on which is located
the now non-operational quarry at Vananda.
Medialand established test sites in the quarry to experiment with
reclamation techniques for re-naturalization and stabilisation.
The experiments have been devised in three phases.
Phase One was completed in May 2002 and consists of raised planting
beds constructed of rubble found on site and filled with different
mixtures of soil and rock dust from storage piles. Several variables
were tested ; types of plant, transplantation methods, the comparison
of soil additives and hydro-seed mixtures.
Careful monitoring of the test sites is conducted regularly and
the results are used as a reference for other sites presenting
the similar problems.
